Quarter System of lumber labeling
The Quarter System of lumber labeling identifies lumber by increments of 1/4" thickness in raw cut. Example: 6/4 or 6-quarter lumber is 1-1/2" in rough cut. You may find 6/4, 5/4, 4/4 or other designations for lumber measurement. Typically, finish cuts loose 1/4" in smoothing, so, 4/4 lumber would be about 3/4" thick, 6/4 lumber would be about 1-1/4" thick.
